The Three Gaits: What to Look For
In dressage, the quality of the three basic gaits — walk, trot, and canter — is paramount. Judges and buyers alike prioritise horses with natural rhythm, elasticity, and expression. Here is what to look for in each gait:
Walk
The walk should be a clear four-beat movement with overtrack (the hind foot landing in front of the corresponding front foot print). A tense or lateral walk is a serious fault that is very difficult to correct.
Trot
Look for suspension, elasticity, and a clear two-beat rhythm. The ideal dressage trot shows impressive swing through the back and natural collection potential. An active, engaged hindleg is essential.
Canter
The canter should be uphill and three-beat, with clear moment of suspension. Natural self-carriage and the ability to shorten and lengthen are signs of a quality dressage canter.
Conformation for Dressage
While no horse is perfect, certain conformation traits make dressage work easier:
- Well-set neck with a natural arch
- Strong, sloping shoulder allowing free foreleg movement
- Short, strong back with well-sprung ribs
- Powerful, well-angled hindquarters
- Correct limb alignment for soundness
Temperament: The Invisible Quality
A dressage horse must be sensitive yet willing — quick to respond to the aids but without spooking or overreacting. The best dressage horses are genuinely curious, forward-thinking, and enjoy their work. Look for a horse that relaxes into work rather than becoming more tense under pressure.
