Pferd kaufen in Europa: Ein vollständiger Leitfaden für Erstkäufer
Why Buying a Horse Requires Careful Planning
Purchasing a horse is one of the most rewarding decisions an equestrian can make — but it also requires research, patience, and the right guidance. Whether you are looking for a jumping horse, a dressage horse, or a leisure companion, the European horse market offers exceptional quality across all disciplines.
Step 1: Define Your Goals and Budget
Before you start searching for horses for sale, be honest about your riding level and long-term goals. A beginner rider needs a calm, experienced horse, while a competitive rider may need a sport horse with proven tournament results. Prices in Europe typically range from €5,000 for a good leisure horse to €80,000+ for top competition horses.
Step 2: Choose the Right Breed
Some of the most popular horse breeds for sale in Central Europe include:
- Hungarian Warmblood – versatile, athletic, ideal for jumping and dressage
- KWPN (Dutch Warmblood) – world-class sport horse, widely available
- Hanoverian – powerful, elegant, excellent for dressage
- Oldenburg – refined movement, top-level dressage horse
- Irish Sport Horse – bold, brave jumping horse
Step 3: Request a Veterinary Pre-Purchase Examination
Always insist on a professional vet check before buying any horse. A thorough pre-purchase examination (PPE) should include X-rays, flexion tests, and an assessment of the horse's lungs and heart. This investment of €300–€800 can save you thousands in future veterinary costs.
Step 4: Arrange International Horse Transport
If you are buying a horse from Hungary or Central Europe and transporting it abroad, work with a certified horse transport company. EU Regulation EC 1/2005 governs the welfare of horses during transport. Reputable transporters provide climate-controlled vehicles, experienced handlers, and proper documentation including health certificates and passports.
Step 5: Trial Period and Trial Rides
Reputable horse traders offer trial periods of 1–2 weeks so you can test the horse in your own stable and with your own trainer. Never buy a horse without sitting on it multiple times and ideally having your trainer evaluate it as well.
